To Sir with Love (11/19)

Welcome back to the Book & Movie Discussion Group – an open invitation to those who love movies and the books that inspired them! “Back to School” is our theme this fall, featuring a group of classic books and movies that includes multiple award-winners and award nominees.

                The Paper Chase (1/2010)

Copies of the books will be available to borrow from the library in the weeks prior to each screening. After reading the book at home, participants are welcome to join us to watch the film in the library gallery, followed by a lively discussion comparing the book and movie. Bring a brown-bag supper if you like; light refreshments will be available. See you there!

To Sir with Love  (1967) is a powerful drama starring Sidney Poitier as Mark Thackery, an unemployed engineer who takes a teaching position in London’s tough East End, working with disruptive teenagers who have no interest in learning. After initial failure, Thackery develops an unorthodox and effective teaching style that both reflects and encourages mutual respect between him and his students. Poitier’s charismatic performance inspired similarly-themed TV shows, and has remained appealing decades later.

The Paper Chase (1973) is considered one of the greatest renderings of education ever filmed, described in one review as “a dazzlingly authentic and moving depiction of the trials and tribulations of law school, brought to life by the breathtaking performance of legendary actor John Houseman in an Oscar-winning performance.” This uplifting film spawned a TV series by the same name, also starring Houseman.
